The Fault

This device just simply won’t turn on no matter what you do. Because of the paper display, it keeps the last displayed image frozen on it, but won’t do anything else. It’s totally unresponsive, but the low battery symbol is a bit of a giveaway as to roughly what went wrong. A quick look into the charging port confirms this.

See how it’s all folded up in there? Time for a replacement charge port.

The Repair

The good news for this is that replacement charging ports for these devices are really cheap! At the time of writing it’s about £5.00 for a couple. It is a soldering job to replace them, but for a cheap device that comes apart relatively easily it really doesn’t take long or carry much risk. Once open, you can see the faulty charging port at the bottom of the photo, just to the right of the big black bit.

… with the port replaced it’s powering back up!

And just like that! A nice easy repair. Although you’ve got to be a bit careful with the display’s ribbon cables, these devices are quite easy to work on so it’s always worth a look.
